To the Congregation of the Troy First United Methodist Church: the Availability of a Summary of the Congregation’s Responses to the Three Questions.
Dear Congregants,
The Leadership Team would again, like to thank everyone who submitted responses to the three questions. This survey is a vital part of learning about the needs of the congregation of Troy First United Methodist Church and will be very helpful as the congregation decides our pathways forward.
This Summary is an attempt to condense the over 200 responses to the questions asked, into a manageable format that can help everyone in the congregation celebrate the positives of our church, recognize the opportunities for change and help identify our future priorities.
We emphasize, that this Summary is NOT the Final Report from Rev. Doug Anderson. Repeat, this Summary is NOT the Final Report from Rev. Anderson. His report will be released to the congregation some time after his visit this weekend – Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th.
Please take time to review the Summary. Questions and comments can be directed to the Leadership Team at: Leadership@troyfumc.org We look forward to hearing from you.
We prayerfully ask for God’s Blessing as we take next steps of the Congregational Listening Process.
Have a Blessed Day,
The Leadership Team

Detailed Responses:
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT TROY FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH?
1. Pastor Chris and his team. They seem to flow really well and organize everything for us. They also make it fun.
2. Full of love! So many smiling faces. The employees seem to enjoy their jobs which is a good sign that we are doing something right.
3. I appreciate having sermon notes and Scriptures included in each bulletin.
4. I enjoy hearing male contemporary musicians and singers perform together.
5. I am thankful for Pastor Chris for allowing members of the congregation to share their many talents during the services.
6. I am grateful that FUMC offers chances for women to meet, share their faith and testimony.
7. That the Troy FUMC decided to remain part of the United Methodist Church.
8. FUMC has a health ratio of older to younger members as opposed to having mostly older members (although that is the case in the traditional worship services. While there are mostly younger families at the contemporary worship service but still a nice mix of older and younger at contemporary worship. The 9:30 worship family is
the future of this church with its creativity and spirit of worship. VBS is a testimony to this.
9. The Sunday morning community breakfast ministry, who love and serve each guest. The volunteers who are truly the feet and hands of Christ.
10. I love that Troy First has relevant and in-depth sermons for personal growth and introspection.
11. We get the privilege to see the history, stained glass and hear the acoustics of an older building while being immersed in different worship styles.
12. The best thing I have found at First Church is a variety of open women’s groups. Soul Sisters and Faith Talks. Since I have been very active in UMW in other churches, when I visited a meeting here, it was obvious these ladies were not interested in adding new members.
13. Thank God that Pastor Chris preaches at all three services. If Pastor Chris leaves or gets pushed out, we look for a new church.
14. It is a multi-generational church. In the downtown Troy community. As a newcomer to the community, no matter what service time that I have attended, at least one or two people say a few words to me to make me feel welcome. Maybe you don’t know how unusual that is. Your people are not just focused on each other. They are
outward facing and make an effort to speak to new faces. I have been to many churches where this is just not the case.
15. During our 25 plus years at Troy FUMC, we have always participated the opportunity to worship in a traditional service, focused on biblical principles as understood through Methodist theology and practices. We were able to raise our children in this atmosphere, with well run children and youth programs that included participation from many church members.
16. Free community breakfast for everyone.
17. Mark, Dave, Tawny – those members that remain.
18. A beautiful place of worship that thankfully remains active in ministry inside the walls and out in the community.
19. I love that this church has 2 types of worship services for the diversity of our city. First Place is not only used for worship but a usable space for the city too. Can it be promoted more?
20. The people. The staff. Our incredible pastor. More recently grew to appreciate Ashley and Nicole as they partner to grow the family ministry. They are absolute gems. They put on an amazing VBS that I was able to serve with. I don’t think they get enough credit for all the behind the scenes for our church.
21. My church family and all the things we do to promote and raise $$ for local and international missions.
22. A place to come together with old and new friends. Provide support for each other in celebrations and times when support is needed.
23. Worship in a prayerful space surrounded by like believers.
24. Coming together to share our Christian Love with the community and the world.
25. We have raised our family here over close to 50 years. Feels safe.
26. Love studying the Bible and finding new meaning with others.
27. Friendships. The community and relationships within the church are wonderful.
28. Music programs. The choir is fantastic and Mark, the choir director, does an amazing job. All of the music is excellent.
29. Homeless breakfast. This program provides a wonderful service to the community.
30. Kitchen Crew. The crew does an excellent job with our communal meals.
31. Funeral meals. The meals provided by church members during difficult times are greatly appreciated.
32. UWIF (United Women in Faith) Organization. Through the Rummage Sale and Christmas Cookie walk, we successfully raise funds to donate to local charities. Church administration does not provide much support.
33. Student Loans, which help our students to help pay for Advanced education, which my family has used.
34. I love how inviting Troy FUMC has been to new families. There is an authentic nature to the church that does not give of production “vibes” where people feel like we are just a church full of “actors”. I have found that the congregation genuinely cares for one another, not that we are perfect, but in our imperfections, love still shines through.
35. I love that Troy First has relevant and in depth sermons for personal growth and introspection.
36. We have been attending Troy First UMC for over 20 years. Over those years, we have been blest with three “Called of Men of God” Pastors: Jim Wilson, David Leckrone, and Chris Heckaman. Each one has been very different in their preaching for the pulpit, however, each one brought god’s Love to our congregation. These three men have given god’s loving guidance to this church during numerous crisis issues over the years.
37. How Chris and his staff are so connectional. They truly love people and you can tell they love their jobs. We are so blessed.
38. First Place being utilized for more than just church service.
39. The people that serve the church through service, attendance, prayers and gifts. FUMC has always been a church where participation and engagement was a priority. Many of our members have left the church leading to a vacuum in leadership, attendance and financial support. The change from an organization using church committees to a leadership format has eliminated the number of people who feel engaged in the church as active participants. Our people have lost their voice.
40. There is a “core” of members who really do care about the life of our church. Our committees are working hard to carry on the work of the church. It has been encouraging to see newer and younger members start to take up the mantle of leadership and joining committee programs.
41. The best thing about Troy First is the relationships. The majority of the church family encourages one another. Through some life trials, my family has felt supported and cared for through relationships. We feel that our staff sets the tone for this and encourages inclusion across the board.
42. I don’t know all of the things we do as a church. I volunteer at the Sunday breakfast and I think that is important and makes an impact. The servers have a great relationship with people who walk thru the door.
43. Other than the awesome people, we truly have the best staff too! They truly serve with their hearts.
44. The sense of community and the many opportunities the church provides for people to serve and make a difference. I also appreciate all the ways Family Ministry helps my boys grow in their faith, learn more about Jesus, and understand the importance and caring for others.
45. The youth groups, Sunday classes/jam for the kids.
46. Pastor Chris’s sermons and congregation.
47. Chris Heckaman.
48. The friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Youth/child groups.
49. The members, the outreach the breakfast ministry.
50. Faith Talks, Soul Sisters, Breakfast Ministry.
51. Community of people
52. Reading of scripture from Holy Bible during the services & talk of scripture pertaining to life & struggles. It’s also a community church. I know a lot of people who go here before I started coming to this church!
53. Community Breakfast Sunday Morning & Choir
54. The great fellowship
55. A feeling of community
56. For me, I like how it’s relaxed
57. The music, the stained-glass windows, the people
58. Music
59. Talent
60. Love the music and enjoy the friendships
61. All the Mission work. Friendly people, lovely choir
62. Troy First offers worship opportunities for all ages. The various activities woven into the week offers times for community as a church family. Outreach into the community is great.
63. There are several good things going on in the church. Ashley is doing aa wonderful job with family ministry. The breakfast ministry is a great outreach.
64. Fellowship
65. The friendliness of the people
66. Feels familiar and like home because of being members for over 50 years.
67. Pastor Chris and his love for the Lord!
68. Best thing about TroyFUMC: The people! Supportive, Loving and Helpful.
69. People are friendly and welcoming
70. Pastor Chris and Nicole Ashbrook as his assistant. They do ministry right, both have huge hearts for the Lord! Both have helped me through so much spiritually.
71. The people! A big church family
72. The best thing about Troy FUMC is the wide age range and backgrounds of the members. Some members have attended for years while some are new to the congregation. It’s nice to have the comfort of the past mixed with fresh ideas for the future.
73. My fellow parishioners that have stuck it out for the love of OUR church. There is still a hole from all the families that felt unheard and left the church rather than watch her fall apart due to the misrepresentations that were being said, and continue today. The heart of our church was weakened, but she still beats strong by those of us that have remained. It appears that those serving on the questionably created Leadership Board fail to listen or respond to questions asked. Our music is fabulous! The best things are the traditional parishioners and the tradition musicians (choir & bells) they keep the spirit present & bring JOY.
74. The best thing about Troy First is the people. We have a true family of people at Troy First. Also, we feel that the outreach ministries are exceptional. These ministries include the breakfast ministry, Haiti, Bradley's House of Hope, etc.
75. The best thing is that no matter what is happening in the world, community, or within our church walls, the church stays focused on the mission and keeping our eyes on God. This church has a firm foundation.
76. no comment
77. The best things are the wonderful people and the music in the traditional service. I love the fact that the music is “traditional.” The quality is very high and we have a lot of variety. Mark Rogers is a treasure!! Tawnie and Dave P. are also great!
78. Our church family has a deep love for the Lord. The Church staff and leaders are committed to serving well. Leadership is always willing to look at how things can be improved. There are many that genuinely want the Church to move forward. There’s a deep love for each other and care..
79. So many things- but I think it’s great we have traditional and contemporary. Pastor Chris has done a great job at allowing the different ways to worship. His messages are great and down to earth.
80. The people!
81. church family culture
82. The staff are one of the greatest strengths of Troy First UMC. They are incredibly helpful, caring, loving, and committed to serving the church and its people. There is a genuine desire among the staff to see the church thrive and to minister to the congregation and community.
83. Faith Talks, Soul Sisters, Breakfast Ministry.
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT IS NOT EFFECTIVE AS IT COULD BE?
1. The greeters at the traditional services. When someone walks in new, they have no idea where to go if in the back of the building. We need friendly faces at the door.
2. Things for young families.
3. 4. What do we currently offer that feel welcoming and inviting to teens? What do we have in place that encourages teens to return consistently and become committed?
5. Are there any outreach opportunities specifically for teens?
6. What evangelism efforts are currently happening to help grow the youth group?
7. Unity of identity in Christ. While there are two separate buildings for worship and three different worship services, we have forgotten that we are ONE CHURCH! Recently, I attended both the 9:30 and 11:00 worship services. At the 11:00 service, I found myself looking around the sanctuary and only seeing “old People”. I felt for the first time that I was a “guest”. I spotted a young person I knew, who sat alone in the back row. I mentioned to several people near me that this younger person was visiting but no one made an effort to greet her and make her feel welcome! This is
the first and only church I have attended that there has been such a sense of division and lack of respect for the pastor. Members who were openly critical and demeaning. The un-Christian behavior from members. I was shocked and ashamed of them. I remember thinking, “Why am I even here and in this room with these people?
8. I am deeply moved by powerful worship music and look forward to what is to come for the contemporary service.
9. Community based hospitality. Most people stick to themselves unless prompted to get up and say hi to someone and that is yet for a moment. There is a culture of 2 churches on 1 campus instead of one church. Traditionalists and Contemporaries do not seem to find the common ground except that they attend the same church called Troy FUMC. New people have been there months before others take notice or they have to introduce themselves. No small groups – the breaking of bread helps spread community hospitality. Greeting people at the door only goes so far as there isn’t much of that due to the same 10% that serve. While that is normal in church, it shouldn’t be. It is not just the job of the Pastor to equip the Saints; it is all leaders.
10. First, it would be nice if First Church could be ONE church. It is obvious that the traditional Service people who come over to instruct us at Contemporary service have the look on their face that says, :I wish I wasn’t here.” The members need to welcome new members. We have had to sit through a few Traditional Services. They spend too much time on announcements and too many people sit there whining about the sermon, the sound system and other members. When we first started coming after Pastor Chris got here, he invited the men of the church to a picnic at his
home. The men circled into groups and didn’t speak to anyone that weren’t in their group. On old guy even took his chair. Needless to say, he saw no reason to go to anything else they had.
11. This is the first church we have been in that lost members instead of welcoming new members. Every other church we have attended, and in different parts of the country, grew membership. Some substantially. What did they have in common? Each of those churches opened their arms and hearts to new members.
12. One minor criticism that I have is that when I first tried the (:30 service, I went into the chapel as usual. No one was there, no signage available to direct me across the street to where the service was being held. I spent a few moments and quiet reflection in the chapel and did not attend a service that day. Please, could you put a sign or have a person posted to direct visitors to the 9:30 location? And please, don’t just list the name of the building where it is at, but be specific enough that someone with no idea what anything is called, can get there. Thank you.
13. We have been concerned for some time about the shrinking number of church members that are involved in church leadership and how leadership positions are filled. Decisions regarding the preschool, church staffing, and committee responsibilities have challenged our trust in the pastoral and lay leadership on Troy FUMC. A number of Troy FUMC members, some whom we have known for decades, have left Troy FUMC because of leadership actions or other reasons over the last several years. Others have simply stopped attending church. There appears to be
little concern from the church leadership that this is happening, but it concerning to us. We hope that there will be serious consideration given to how the church is being lead from both a spiritual and business perspective.
14. Committees and communication are not effective. Committees are disjointed and members serving on one committee have limited information form other committees. Structure and authority of the committees are unclear.
Communication is getting better but still feels like an uphill battle to know what is going on particularly when people are suddenly leaving with little or no reason why. Even being on committees doesn’t mean we all get all the information we should be getting.
15. Trust is missing.
16. There are communication tools that are used; however, it feels that many things are not communicated in a timely manner. It often feels (like) the congregation is receiving communications haphazardly or after the fact. We have also tried to communicate in the past to the Leadership Team, however, that is not welcomed or falls on deaf ears.
17. I would like to see a hospitality ministry. If someone new comes in, they could be “paired” with a member who would be willing to help. I would also like to ee a sign for the stairs for the balcony, or even a couple of “You are Here!” posters in several places.
18. Ways for younger parents to grow in faith. No Sunday School class for our age group.
19. The reconfiguring of committees and leadership board and decision that are made and never announced or explained.
20. Transparency and communications – not always easy to find out who is responsible for what, what the committees are, who serves on them, when they meet. Is there a way to help?
21. Care for the ill or hospitalized. While I understand the need for confidentiality, we could ask for permission to share their status. It could be beneficial to know if the Minister visits ill members, as praying for those in need is vital. Currently, If feels as though these individuals can be easily overlooked and forgotten. Someone asks for prayers, but there is no follow up a to how they are doing. There needs to be a list in the weekly bulletin for a continued pray list. We used to do that and someone took it away.
22. Clergy Engagement. We could improve the overall warmth of the church by having the clergy mingle and connect with the congregation prior to the start of the service.
23. Member Retention. Is there a follow-up process for members who leave the church? We have lost many members over the last six years and attendance has visibly declined. Understanding their reasons could help us improve.
24. A few years ago, we started doing regular events that were held to bring both the Contemporary and Traditional Services together. I saw a lot of movement towards a more unified church, but in the last year, this seems to have dropped. Not that it has dropped 100%, but there has been less of an emphasis on having gatherings for all outside of the Sunday morning services. I put this here because I feel like it was effective, but we have lost emphasis on this, and I think as this drops, we will see our other measures to include each other will become less effective.
25. Involvement in the community by the ministerial staff since none of them live in the community except for Mike Smith, who is very involved. The sick are visited by staff but maybe two other families could be designated each week to get some personal contact. People need to know they are cared about by our staff.
26. I am deeply moved by powerful worship music and look forward to what is to come from contemporary worship service.
27. We have three services, 8:00 traditional, 9:30 contemporary, & 11:00 traditional. I feel that each one offers parishioners ways to worship that touch their hearts. That being said, I also would like those attending whichever service to know we are one church, and together we serve one God, as long as you come. It isn’t a competition,
it’s a community. Loving God and attending worship wherever you receive his Love is primary. Knowing we offer different times and ways is a blessing. I just feel we need to remember we are together, one church serving god, just in different ways.
28. The congregation can do better at connecting to more than just those who sit nearby.
29. Communications.
30. Leadership continues to be an issue resulting in mistrust, deceased participation by regular church members, decreased church attendance and decreasing financial support. When asked what the leadership is doing and how the congregation can become active in a church initiative to retain membership, there was a void of response. Knowing that most denominational churches are struggling to retain members, it would seem like some local initiatives would be in order.
31. I am not sure our congregation understands the financial constraints of the running of Troy FUMC. I would guess quite a few of our families are having a tough time bearing up I the current economy. Tithing is taken a back seat to groceries, gas and getting the kiddos ready for school. Is there a way to break it down in a simple broad form? An educational session perhaps? Maybe during the Sunday School time? I would think now would be a good time to maximize an opportunity for getting back on track by the end of the year? I’m old enough to remember the old Pony Express saddlebag days (at another Methodist church we attended( where there were some
education coming from the leadership (pastoral and administrative) in letters or emails and even a minute or two during Sunday services for a few weeks leading up to the start of passing along those saddlebags. It seems to bring the church together.
32. In general, I feel that our pastors and staff have genuine hearts and work diligently to do the best they can within all margins. It feels like a relief to have had a few pastor family members off staff. It has been feeling like a conflict of interest, which caused people to not have the space to speak up knowing that it was dictated by a group of family members. It did appear that our lead pastor tried to hear from the congregation and did his best to lead us as he was able. However, in general, it might be a healthier place going forward not to have multiple family members on
staff at the same time. I do believe a lot of great things are happening in our church in general.
33. Not sure for I don’t know all of what we do.
34. The amount who step up to help serve. It takes a lot of people to make things happen.
35. Reaching even more people in the community who are not already connected to the church. I think continuing to find new ways to welcome and engage people outside the church would be a great area of growth.
36. The only thing I can think of is youth group for all ages on Sunday evening.
37. Bringing in new, younger members and young families. Many attend with youth based activities like vacation bible school, fall fest etc., but don’t attend the church outside of those functions.
38. Sometimes it’s a little chilly in the sanctuary.
39. Retaining members. There have been members that have left Troy for various reasons. Some left to follow Pastor ty. Some left due to the UMC – Global split. While others, long standing families, left due to other leadership reasons.
40. 30 minutes of boring music to begin the contemporary service.
41. Pastoral Leadership- could be more consistent and stronger
42. I have never had communion in this church yet!? I usually come to the 8:00 service. I need communion, not every week, but some time.
43. Bible based sermon- cohesive & logical
44. The sermons need to be more biblical & parallels to stories in the Bible- doesn’t feel like church anymore.
45. No peace group
46. Maybe less song more message
47. Sermons need to be more bible based
48. We would wish for longer scripture based sermons
49. So many members have left the church in the past few years. We miss them so much.
50. Ministry staff could be better
51. Continue to work as one church
52. The church is speaking a lot about going out in the community to bring Jesus- I feel it might be beneficial to have some organized events that could give people opportunity to do this. Most people do not seek outside opportunities themselves.
53. We need to form home Bible study groups
54. More Inspiring sermons
55. For traditional and contemporary services to combine in the traditional sanctuary and feel like one church instead of 2. We can all compromise and alternate music styles. Sermons are the same anyway. This Could also cut expenses and duplication.
56. Participation in programs and activities
57. The contemporary worship music. It’s hard because it’s family of the pastor but we could really use a refresh. I don’t want to speak negatively, but some do not even come in until the music is almost over. Maybe have some fresh musicians, not the theatrical ones that come every once in a while. Ask the people who come, and allow them to be honest.
58. sometimes sermons are difficult to follow
59. One thing not effective: The heating/AC. No matter where you sit it is just too cold.
60. the coming together as one church although Pastor Chris has been getting this to happen more than anyone before.
61. Not sure why Pastor Chris has said “a-woman” instead of amen when talking about prayer, or taught the children to say it during children’s church but "Amen" is an ancient Hebrew word meaning "so be it," "truly," or "verily". No gender link: The "-men" sound in "amen" has nothing to do with the English word "men" or human gender; it shares a linguistic root with words meaning firmness, truth, and trust. I think this is very confusing. I hope this was not an attempt to change biblical teachings to appease society. He has great teachings otherwise, but this was very confusing so I had to look it up.
62. I feel that, over the past several years, there has been a constant undercurrent or buzz of misinformation or misunderstanding circulating through the congregation. The pastors and leadership try to address issues as they arise, but a new “fire” erupts as soon as an old one is extinguished. This seems to keep us from moving forward in living out our mission to “gather, grow, give, glorify and go.”
63. Honest communication at all levels...local leadership, pastor, admin and recent appointed district, and presume concerns were ignored at cabinet level too.
64. One thing that is not effective is new membership opportunities. Also not being able to keep current and/or past members at the church. We have lost a number of families within the past several years since Chris has been here. Not only did we lose a lot of families that had been here for years but we have also lost families that have come into the church during Chris' s time. These families came to Troy First because of Chris and have since left. We like Pastor Chris's messages and we like him as a person there just seems to be a disconnect from the rest of his duties at the church. Another example of this was the preschool fiasco.
65. I would like to see growth in the church. There could be more opportunities with preschool families and family ministry. I do believe this is already in action with our new family ministry pastor. I am excited to see what is on the horizon for the next year.
66. The sermons by Pastor Chris are often hard to follow or understand the point.
67. There may be ministries working towards their own vision versus the broader church vision. There are established ministries that may not have been evaluated recently to see if it still fits in with our mission and values. For example: the UMW seems to be its own thing. It’s own agenda. Doesn’t involve the church, and after attending a couple times, they can even be divisive. They use the church buildings during peak times for fundraisers, but we never know what they are raising funds for?? Is it funds for the church ministries? If so, that would be helpful to know. How does this tie into the broader church vision?
68. The togetherness of the congregation. From the very beginning of Pastor Chris’ arrival, there has been a circle of people who complain about him and have not given up trying to get him removed. It’s like a coup… they are vicious and do not like that he was a DS or came from Ginghamsburg. They make it known that they are contacting the district and trying to make
his life miserable here. It’s really so embarrassing and sad to see this group working so hard against he and his staff. Praying that the attempts to remove him have subsided. If someone doesn’t like him they can move on . This is God’s church, not a circle of people who were used to controlling the church. Pastor Chris has a good balance of the committees now that represent all services, and I think that’s another issue for them because they feel the traditional is superior. It’s so disturbing.
69. The people!
70. The communication about UMW not being a part of our church. I think the church should know they operate completely separately.
71. Sometimes the choice of music could be better known to the congregation for more participation.
IF YOU COULD, WHAT WOULD BE ONE THING YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT TROY
FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH?
1. I think some of us that have been around for a long while are set in our ways. We need to look at what the future will look like if we are not sowing into the next generations. We have so many wise friends in our church family. How can we reach and support the next generation?
2. The service times are not super easy for young parents. Maybe consider having Sunday school service a little later?
3. Suggestion: Host a citywide youth conference at Troy FUMC.
4. Real change requires courage!
5. Suggestion: The choir robes could use a refresh. Consider wearing regular clothes in coordinated colors to make the choir feel more inviting to younger participants.
6. Suggestion: Have the traditional choir make an occasional guest appearance in the contemporary service.
7. I strongly recommend name tags – at least for leaders – and affordable name tags for members. Names matter and people appreciate being greeted by name.
8. Encourage everyone to step outside their comfort zones and intentionally be friendlier, showing love and kindness.
9. I would combine worship services into a least one monthly joint service in the main sanctuary so that our older members, who only loves the hymns and our younger families, who only love contemporary music could learn together, that all music is worship to God’s ears! Perhaps then, a greater sense of unity might be realized,
remembering who we are, and who we are worshiping.
10. We need to be sure that are we welcoming and respectful of everyone who attends and worships at Troy FUMC. We need to celebrate the gifts and talents each member of our church shares and encourage everyone in their worship of Jesus!
11. Bring traditional and contemporary styles of worship together in one service. I guess a blending of the old with the new. I love the creeds, liturgy and many of the rituals of a traditional service but also real enjoy a strong cohesive contemporary worship band.
12. Decisions would be based on Holy Spirit governing rather than just the Book of Discipline and business degrees.
13. I would move all the services to the sanctuary. I realize the pastor at the time was always trying to please a certain group of people. Many of those people are gone. It is time to move into the 21st Century. All the real ministry of the church happens at First Place. This is where we feed and clothe the homeless. This is the service that
brings young families into the church. They are the future, if there is one.
14. My biggest suggestion to the leadership is to GO VISIT THE GROWING CHURCHES IN THE AREA. We pass three on our way to Troy First. By the way, why are we having an old guy coming in who so supposed to give us fresh ideas? I worry he is just here to support the “party line” which obviously isn’t working. Good Luck with this
project.
15. I do not have enough experience/information to answer this question. One thing I wonder – With your mission statement of the 5 g’s, (Gather – Grow – Give – Glorify – Go), is everyone is defining those words and applying them in the same way?
16. We have continued to watch with dismay as a shrinking number of church members have taken control over church communications, committees, and direction. We have lost faith in leadership and lost trust in some decision makers. We feel it is time for a change in pastoral leadership and a return to a focus on reliable
communications and involvement of lay persons who are not staff members in decision making.
17. Find an effective way to have small groups. Attempts at small groups in the past have fallen short. We have been blessed by more younger families I recent history but we need more and we need to keep the families we do have. Effective small groups that go deeper than social engagements are what is needed.
18. I am curious about the timing of this listening process since Lisa has left her church position, now Seth has left the worship position. Is this because Chris is moving on after his sabbatical? I presume Nicole will follow, since she followed him (Chris) here. Is our church about to lose all the employees except Mary? Then what happens to us since our numbers are down? Would a new pastor be like those assigned to a smaller church that can’t afford much? We’ve lost a lot of big give(er)s. Concerned about this church on so many levels.
19. We would love to see the full pews again that were once filled with longstanding and active families of Troy first United Methodist Church.
20. Getting children involved in the worship services…age and ability appropriate.
21. More ways for younger parents to connect. We are running around on Sudays and really do not have the opportunity to connect.
22. Ask the long term members that have left the church why they have felt the need to leave our church. The vast majority have never been asked that question.
23. Add greeters back to the church (name tags). Rotate ushers – clarify their roles.
24. Sermon Focus. While I appreciate our Minister, there is a tendency for sermons to lose focus, making it difficult for the congregation to follow the core message. More structured messaging would be helpful. My friend and I sit with frequent looks at each other during the service that say, “What in the world is he talking about?”.
25. I am not sure who our district Superintendent is in charge of our church
26. I have attended this church for over 50 years. I love this church, but have watched the losing of so many good friends to other churches in the last 6 years. Why? Thank you for your time and dedication to our church community.
27. The change that I would like to see is more of a priority of focus. I have seen in several churches that I have been a part of , …that most churches are treated more like a secular business that a Holy Spirit, divine family of god.
28. I don’t see and big changes that need to occur at Troy FUMC, but rather a strong focus on the Holy Spirit over our decision making. We lead in love in a lot that we do, which is incredible. My prayer is that the love we already have will increase as we continue to humble ourselves and ask the holy spirit to take over our decision
making.
29. Praying for this time of leadership discernment, that Troy FUMC will grow in spiritual wisdom, grace and love. I hope that the Holy Spirit will fill each person on the board and that the gates of Hell will shake because the Kingdom of God is continuing to grow into territories where Satan thinks he still has dominion. The Troy community
has grown a lot in the last 10 years, and I believe there are a lot of people who are in need of an experience with the Holy Spirit, and I know Troy FUMC will be able to be used by God, the Father, to continue to minister to their spiritual/physical needs. In Christ’s Name, I pray for the Church. Love you all and may Jesus Christ bless your
ministry and obedience.
30. Bring traditional and contemporary styles of worship together in one service. I guess a blending of the old with the new. I love the creeds, liturgy and many of the rituals of a traditional service but I also really enjoy a strong, cohesive contemporary worship band.
31. I would like to see more joint services with a variety of music. We can be more united if we show open hearted worship together. God loves us all. Troy First UMC is not two churches. We are one united in our Love of Christ and our Service to Him.
32. The bickering and negativity towards our pastor. He has done some wonderful things, like the lunch bunch, that I just attended. Wow, were there 100 plus there?
33. Help with the page turning for our chancel bells. A tablet would really help and the benefit may be a draw for the younger generation.
34. Return to member supported church committees that allow more active participation, more voices heard and recognized and increased accountability in the workings of our local church. Using a leadership board organization has not been seen to be effective.
35. Develop a committee to address members that are withdrawing form the church. Asking what the members need before they feel that their only decision should be to remove themselves from a church that doesn’t care or listen. There have been many that have left with no active or organized follow-through by the church.
36. Small groups to address the needs of the people sitting in the pews before they decide that no one Is interested in their church participation, ideas and attendance.
37. Our church has undergone a great deal in recent years with changes in leadership, staff and membership. I do not believe we need a lot of heavy handed change for change’s sake at this time. Can we focus on steady leadership and steady growth? Maybe looking to sail in calmer seas versus navigating choppy seas (making changes?). Start by focusing on the foundation of things that are going well and grow those areas. I think we’ve come through so much change that another period of big change may put the church in further decline.
38. One thing I would change, is having more people willing to step up and volunteer and be involved. All too often, people say they are past the point of volunteering either because their think they are too old or because they don’t want to make time or they feel they did it with their kids and shouldn’t have to now. Across the board,
more people seem to have started getting engaged, but I would love to see more people step into their potential and not let hurdles or negative thoughts keep them from being involved.
39. Find a way to get more young people in the services and get them involved.
40. The nastiness of the clicks that are trying to get rid of our pastor. If you only knew how much they try to work against him! I’ve heard they have a list of things they dislike about him. They have called his boss and tried to get him removed (and are talking about it). Please protect our pastor. He is a man of God.
41. I would continue to grow opportunities for children, youth, and families to be involved in the life of the church, especially through serving, fellowship and activities where different generations participate together.
42. More updated music/singers for contemporary services.
43. Worship team needs more range in contemporary service and open up to guest performers like in the traditional services.
44. I wish people could see the good in everyone and stop being so judgmental on their own congregation. But I guess that’s every church.
45. The praise band has sounded great the last two Sundays in August.
46. The order of contemporary service. Have more scriptures, the Lord’s Prayer, and less
47. Aa clear purpose – are we kid friendly? Street people friendly? It is a safety and comfort issue around 9-10:30.
48. The last 2 upper pews need removed in the balcony below the stained glass of Jesus praying in the garden of Gesthaname.
49. More young families- Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. Should not have ant other meetings, dinners, activities, etc.
50. Old traditions- keep to an hour if possible. Would like to see the minister back in robe in the right attire for a minister.
51. Have a peace-oriented group
52. More pot lucks- food is always good
53. Less focus on social, more emphasis on scripture based sermons
54. More attention to the messages of God woven into the sermons. Longer sermons less time on things like birthdays. Make it quick.
55. I am so concerned about all the members we have lost and the reason for that.
56. Work to keep our members involved & happy so we can keep them.
57. Upgrade the ministry we need better leadership.
58. I am proud of my church
59. I feel there is a division in the church. We need to figure out a way to bring everyone together. There is a distance between the older generation and younger generation. People in the church do not volunteer to help out in many ways. It would be nice to have more participation and not the same people doing everything all the time. I feel there is a disconnect between Chris and the older generation. Maybe there should be an opportunity to get to know him better. Maybe they would be able to see his good qualities instead of his flaws. Relationships and personal communication makes them feel included. I see the older people who he knows from committees are more liking him and forgiving of when he first came.
60. Communion more often please
61. Tawnie should play thru any new hymn before we sing it. And/or verbally read the first verse. Let the congregation pick hymns occasionally.
63. Nothing. Pastor Chris is a people person - very good with comforting and praying with those in need. There are plenty of opportunities for congregants to learn, grow, and serve.
64. One thing to change: Combine the 8:00 and 11:00 services to one. That way people get to know each other better, the organist, lay readers, musicians and staff don ‘t have so much to do on Sundays. Despite efforts we already have a division between the contemporary service and the traditional and online groups. And then we split the traditional also. It
just isn’t necessary to do that anymore.
65. Find a way to bring people back that have left
66. have ONE service with both traditional style and contemporary and have kids back in church with their parents. have a Sunday school class for parents so they have that, while their kids are in Sunday school. Take pews out of the traditional building, replace with chairs so we can all move freely to greet each other. That is more than one but they all go together. thank you for allowing us to share our thoughts.
67. I would get everyone serving in some capacity. It’s such a joy to serve.
68. I feel that reducing the number of Sunday services would help to bring us together. We all have a “preferred” time to attend worship, but the occasional times that we have all come together for one big service have been well attended and filled with a “buzz” of excitement and connection.
69. I would hate to lose more members, but would love to see those we do have grow closer and more engaged.
70. We continue to be 2 churches. The contemporary church and the traditional church. I know other churches where there is NOT a division, where the body of Christ is considered one body. I know the response will be when was the last time you walked across the street & attended a contemporary service? I listen to a lot of contemporary Christian music and
rarely know any of the music used in this service, so I go where I know the songs I'm going to be singing. And of course, the leadership's failure to be honest, follow honest hiring practices (SPRC doesn't even meet & new positions are created & people hired), threatening church members - calling them into the pastor's office for a discussion; threatening to file charges against members for trespassing; last minute decisions to "no longer support ministries" ie: Let's Go short notice that the church was no longer going to support this ministry.
71. We think that having Dr. Anderson come into listen to what the congregation has to say will be a step in the right direction. We feel that we need some guidance to get us back on track of welcoming new families and keeping those families.
72. I would like to see more connection between the members. It is easier to care for each other when you are close enough to share burdens and joys with each other. I would also like to see some traditional elements within the contemporary service. I actually like traditional music and elements but the 930 service is more welcoming to families.
73. I would have Pastor Dave, Pastor Mike, and Ashley M. give there sermon more often.
74. To become more intentional about evaluating ministries, not simply asking whether we’ve always done something but asking whether it’s still effective. Is it meeting a church or a community need?. I would love to see our ministries, staff, leadership and congregation, moving in the same direction rather than operating in separate pockets …would also love to
see our church become easier for young families and people who are not already connected to the church to enter and become involved.
75. Protection and respect for those who have chosen to serve here. Specifically Pastor Chris and his staff. They give so much to the church, and to us. In return they get to live in constant reaction mode due to some wicked ways of our supposed church family. They really need to repent. Our church needs to protect them all! Please pray that all will be
renewed.
76. What the people feel are important.
77. We need to not allow the UMW to take over our church. They operate as their own “church” and do things completely aside from our church family which has created more of a sorority than a mission driven chapter of UMW. Do they give to the missions of our church? The children? They have at least a couple storage spots in our church and use a lot of our
resources. . One is prime space that the church actually needs. Do they give back to the church at all? This doesn’t help our church culture, it creates division rather than unity. Please consider having them become more united and missional to our church or they can go elsewhere.
78. I would work intentionally toward greater unity across all worship services and ministries. I would love to see us focus less on “our service” versus “their service” and more on our church, our mission, and our shared purpose. We need to encourage one another, communicate better, and be intentional about building bridges rather than allowing divisions to continue. We are stronger when we work together and support one another.
79. I would continue to grow opportunities for children, youth, and families to be involved in the life of the church, especially through serving, fellowship and activities where different generations participate together.
80. More updated music/singers for contemporary services.
81. Worship team needs more range in contemporary service and open up to guest performers like in the traditional services.
82. I wish people could see the good in everyone and stop being so judgmental on their own congregation. But I guess that’s every church.
83. The praise band has sounded great the last two Sundays in August.
84. The order of contemporary service. Have more scriptures, the Lord’s Prayer, and less music.
85. Why didn’t the church go “global”. Attendance would have stayed strong.

Previous communication about our Congregational Listening:
Over the coming weeks, while Pastor Chris is on his well-deserved sabbatical, our church will be participating in a Congregational Listening and Discernment Process led by Dr. Douglas Anderson. We wanted to share a little more about this opportunity so everyone understands its purpose.
This process is designed to help us better understand who we are as a congregation today and to prayerfully discern where God may be leading us in the future. During his time with us, Dr. Anderson will meet with church leaders, staff, ministry volunteers, and members of the congregation to listen, ask questions, learn about our ministries, and observe the life of our church. The focus will be on our mission, relationships, ministries, leadership, and how we can continue to grow as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
This is not an investigation or an evaluation of our pastor. Rather, it is a season of listening, learning, and discernment that is intended to strengthen the ministry of our entire congregation.
Although Pastor Chris is away on sabbatical, this process is intentionally focused on hearing from our lay leaders, ministry leaders, staff, and congregation. Healthy United Methodist churches are strengthened when clergy and laity serve together in ministry. Pastor Chris has consistently encouraged the development of strong lay leadership and has often reminded us that the mission of the church belongs to the whole body of Christ. This process reflects those same values.
It is also important to know that no decisions about future changes will be made during this listening process. The first phase is devoted to hearing from our congregation and identifying areas of strength, opportunities for growth, and ways we can continue to fulfill God's mission. Later, Dr. Anderson will provide coaching, encouragement, and recommendations to our leadership based on what he has learned.
When the process is complete, Dr. Anderson will share his observations and recommendations with our Church Leadership Board and with Pastor Chris so that, together, they can prayerfully discern any future steps. Any decisions about the future of our church will continue to be made through our established leadership and governance processes.
We are grateful for this opportunity to reflect, listen, and grow together. We invite you to pray for Dr. Anderson, our church leaders, our congregation, and Pastor Chris during his sabbatical. May God use this season of listening and discernment to strengthen our ministry and prepare us for the opportunities He has in store for Troy First United Methodist Church.
