Unlikely Mentors
There are always horror stories about the In-laws. If you don't know what an In-law is get married. You may get to take one on your honeymoon. Just kidding? I will say up front I had the best in-laws.
Ann's (wife) parents were the best. Her mother was a farm girl raised in northwestern Ohio with 3 sisters and a brother. I use to tease her about milking the cows, feeding the chickens and sloping the hogs. On one our visits to the farm she took me out to the barn and gave chores to do. I was exhausted by the time I went back to the house. I didn't tease her anymore.
Ann's father on the other hand was a role model to me and even though he has passed, his influence is still very much a part of me. He was a MENTOR to me. I actually met Fred (father's name) before I met my wife, Ann. Fred was an Army Pilot flying Medevac. He served in Vietnam twice, rescuing soldiers from the battlefield. He had stories
but he would never fully tell them, I think because they were too painful to tell. He lost his co-pilot on one of his missions and I don't believe he ever got over it.
Fred taught me how to fly as well as his granddaughter who now flies with the Air Force. Of all the things he did, his faith in Christ is what stood out to me. He became my mentor, teaching me it was OK to love Christ. He would attend Chapel every Sunday he was home. I thought, If a warrior like him could have a relationship with Christ it can't be all bad. He was instrumental in my Christian walk. As an added bonus he introduced his daughter to me. Offered me 500 dollars to elope.
I am keenly aware that we are flawed human beings and the grace that God offers us is found in Christ. In this world today we need to be more Christ like. I am sure you have had mentors in your life. What did they teach you? What do you remember? What has become a part of you.
As we make our way through this world, we are not alone. Of all the decisions I have made in life, choosing Christ as a mentor was the best. He is always with me no matter what I do. If you choose Christ as a mentor you will never be the same. That is why God loves you.
