Forever Mistakes
I am so thankful for God’s Grace and Mercy. It is hard to find with everyday people, sometimes impossible. We all stand in the need of Grace that Christ offers us because He loves us. I am always in the need for Mercy because of stupid decisions that I wish I hadn’t made or the mistakes I constantly make.
When I was a senior in high school my father got me an old beater of a car. A 1955 Pontiac Chieftain. A tank of a car. I would drive it to school everyday. As a senior I had the world by the tail or so I thought. One school morning, I got in my car, pulled out of the driveway and sped down the street. We lived in a housing project I called row houses. Out from nowhere, a dog darted in front of me. I was going too fast and hit the dog, killing it. The father came rushing out, yelling at me. I heard words like reckless, irresponsible, going too fast and you killed our dog. The father picked up his pet, and carried it to their backyard. I followed after. The father had taken a shovel and was digging a hole, continuing to yell at me while I watched. There was nothing I could say as he buried his pet.
The story doesn’t end there. A few days later we got a knock on the door. A little boy was standing in the doorway. As he looked at me he said, “You killed my dog.” Over the next few weeks he would show up, knock on the door, and proceed to tell me I killed his dog. It is a mistake I have carried with me all these years.
I know I am not forgiven by the little boy. It’s an emotional scar I carry. It is only through God’s Grace and Mercy that I feel any source of forgiveness. A forever mistake.
We all carry forever mistakes. We can’t take them back, we can’t make them go away. We certainly learn from them. We all have those in our lives. I am thankful that I can walk each day knowing through God’s Grace and Mercy, I am forgiven. Trust me, I carry the memory as we all do when we make mistakes in life. But I also carry the assurance that God’s Grace is sufficient for me and His mercy allows me to live following in His footsteps. God loves you today!
