Distractions of Life
One of the important things I have learned over the span of my life is, “You’ve got to pay attention to what you are doing!”
With distractions come reminders. If I am not paying attention, someone will remind me to “Pay Attention. David, pay attention. You are driving; keep your hands on the wheel. David, watch the road; you are drifting over the yellow line. David, don’t talk while the teacher is talking; pay attention."
This is my favorite one. While learning to fly, my instructor would constantly remind me to look out beyond the plane while keeping my eyes on the instruments. I was supposed to do two things at one time. I was trying to pay attention to “Paying Attention.”
Living out our faith is sometimes the same way. God wants us to listen to His Word and pay attention to what He tells us. We allow ourselves to get distracted by what we think is more important. We get caught up in our religious identity. “You bet, I am United Methodist. Let me tell you all about it.”
I was reminded these past few days that we have one simple thing to do: “To walk our faith journey with Jesus.” In this whole big world, one of the least-used words is love. Jesus used it a lot. “Love others as I have loved you,” “Love one another,” and “God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son.”
Jesus doesn’t call us to follow Him on a complex journey. It is pretty simple: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Knowing you are loved will do more in your life than any other distraction that you create or think is important. Here is a simple statement that you can carry with you through this day: “God Loves You.”
Ignore the distractions of life. Jesus deserves your attention.
