The Thumper Affect

I like to think of myself as a scholar of sorts. With the level of education I have, I must have read something. I was not a good student in the traditional sense. I would read what I needed to read to get by. My parents were concerned, so they put me in a reading class to improve my reading skills. I did it because I had no choice. It was then that I discovered a whole new world of scholarship.

On one of my trips to get a haircut on Saturday morning, I was sitting in the shop waiting my turn. I noticed a Dell comic book on the coffee table. It introduced me to the likes of Donald Duck. I liked it. I wanted more. I discovered lots of characters—not only Donald Duck, but Mickey Mouse, Chip and Dale, Mr. Magoo, Pluto, Minnie Mouse, and Uncle Scrooge. Then there were heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and, of course, Spider-Man.

Every week, I would get a two-dollar allowance, and I would go to the local bookshop and buy new comic books, which were 10 cents apiece at the time. In a short time, I had a collection of over 200 comic books—and it was growing.

Now that I am at the other end of the scholar's journey, I have no regrets. As you might notice, I did get through college, seminary, and even graduate school. Yes, I've read philosophy books, theology books, and history books. I became a student of Civil War history, one of my favorite books being "Grant" by Ron Chernow.

Yep, I am here, reading all kinds of books, even the Bible. I love the stories of Jesus' life. Jesus became real in my life, all because of a comic book on a table in the barbershop.

I have always thought they should have a version of the Bible in comic-book form for kids, but I guess that's going too far.

It's amazing what happens when you read a book you like. Who knows where I would have ended up if I hadn't discovered Donald Duck? In a way, Donald made a way for me to pick up a Bible, and I discovered Jesus.

I want you to discover Jesus on your own today. Pick up the "Good Book." Between the pages, you will discover how much He loves you.

Just a Thought, Not a Sermon!
